About Reiki

Reiki, pronounced “ray-key,” is a Japanese technique to produce profound relaxation, reduce stress, and promote healing. “Rei” refers to the universality of the spiritual dimension. “Ki” means “vital life-force energy.” When combined, it means “universal ife- force energy.” Reiki is channeled healing, administered by the laying on of hands while the client is fully clothed and in a resting position. Therefore, when the Reiki practitioner acts as a conduit for this spiritually guided life-energy, both the practitioner and the receiver are benefited. The practitioner’s energies are never depleted. Giving a treatment always increases one’s energy and well being. Healing – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual – is achieved by the balancing of energies in the system, and Reiki helps us to achieve this balance. We know that when we are relaxed and stress-free, our bodies naturally achieve balance and health. A very simple yet powerful technique, Reiki can be learned easily by anyone. Because it is a universal energy, Reiki belongs to anyone who is ready to receive the gift of healing hands. Reiki hands radiate healing energy at any time, in any place, and for that reason, Reiki is effective wherever hands touch or wherever the energy is intentionally beamed. Reiki is gaining respect within the traditional medical community as a complement to other therapies and treatments, regardless of the physical condition being treated. Many hospitals and cancer centers recognize and acknowledge the benefits their patients derive from Reiki while going through chemotherapy, surgery, or other treatments. In terminal patients, Reiki eases the dying process for the client and their family.

About Reiki

Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. It uses a technique commonly called palm healing as a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional bodies. Through the use of this technique, practitioners claim to transfer healing energy in the form of ki through the palms. There are two main branches of Reiki, commonly referred to as Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. Within both Traditional and Westernized forms of Reiki, there are three forms of degrees, commonly referred to as the First, Second, and Master/Teacher degree. According to Reiki practitioners and Masters, at First Degree, a Reiki practitioner is able to heal himself and others, at Second Degree is able to heal others distantly with the use of specialized symbols, and at Master level is able to teach and attune others to Reiki.

As of July 2009, it has an estimated population of 582,130 making it the 30th most populous in the United States. Portland is Oregon’s most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest, after Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Approximately 2.2 million people live in the Portland metropolitan area (MSA), the 23rd most populous in the United States as of July 2006.

Portland was incorporated in 1851 and is the county seat of Multnomah County. The city extends slightly into Washington County to the west and Clackamas County to the south. It is governed by a commission-based government headed by a mayor and four other commissioners.

The City of Portland has been referred to as one of the most environmentally friendly or “green” cities in the world. The city and region are noted for strong land-use planning and investment in light rail, supported by Metro, a distinctive regional government. Portland is known for its large number of microbreweries and microdistilleries, as well as its coffee enthusiasm. It is also the home of the Trail Blazers NBA team and the Timbers MLS team.

Portland lies in the Marine west coast climate region, marked by warm, dry summers and rainy but mild winters. This climate is ideal for growing roses, and for more than a century, Portland has been known as “The City of Roses” with many rose gardens—most prominently the International Rose Test Garden.
